Last year, Lukashenko spoke of his desire to meet with Raul Castro and visit Fidel's grave together.
The former head of Cuba Raul Castro is facing murder charges in the United States. This was reported by Reuters, citing court documents. Castro, 94, last appeared in public in early May.
The indictment comes amid U.S. President Donald Trump's push for regime change in Cuba, where Castro's communists have been in power since the 1959 revolution, the agency noted.
The details of the charges are not yet known. Last week, a U.S. Justice Department official told Reuters on condition of anonymity that a 1996 incident was expected to be the basis. Back then, Cuban fighter jets shot down airplanes belonging to a group of Cuban immigrants.
Trump has previously called Cuba a "rogue state harboring hostile foreign military forces" and portrayed his administration's actions toward the Caribbean island as part of a broader effort to expand U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere.
"From the shores of Havana to the shores of the Panama Canal, we will drive out the forces of lawlessness, crime and foreign invasion," Trump said.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has said the island poses no threat.
In the meantime, prosecutors in Miami are planning an event to honor the victims of the 1996 incident. The U.S. Justice Department said it would make an announcement in connection with the ceremony, but did not provide details.
Remember, in June 2025, Alexander Lukashenko spoke of his desire to meet with Raul Castro and visit Fidel's grave together. The politician considers him one of the "strong men" along with Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.
Last time Lukashenko met with Raul Castro was in 2015 on the platform of the UN headquarters in New York. Raul Castro visited Belarus in 1976.
