The AFU Hit One Of The Largest Russian Oil Refineries

Zelensky provided details.

On the night of May 22, Ukrainian drones struck the Novo-Yaroslavl Oil Refinery (Slavneft-YaNOS PJSC refinery), one of the five largest in Russia. This was reported by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. "Tonight the Armed Forces of Ukraine operated in the direction of the refinery in Yaroslavl - about 700 kilometers from our territory. We are bringing the war back home, to Russia, and it is quite fair," Zelensky wrote in his Telegram channel following a report by the AFU Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky "on the use of drones against Russian oil refining and export positions." He added that Kiev was preparing other "long-range sanctions" in response to Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities.

Frames of the attack were previously published by the Exilenova+ telegram channel. After analyzing the video, ASTRA confirmed that the likely target of the night strike by Ukrainian drones was the refinery of Slavneft-YANOS PJSC. Before that, the governor of the Yaroslavl region Mikhail Evraev reported "repulsion of a UAV attack" on the region.

The Slavneft-YANOS refinery refines about 15 million tons of oil a year. The enterprise is the main refining asset of Slavneft, 99.7% of which is controlled by Rosneft and Gazprom on a parity basis.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, according to the calculations of the publication "Vot Tak", the AFU attacked Russian refineries at least 158 times. Twenty-four of the 33 refineries with a capacity of 1 million tons of oil or more per year have come under attack. If in the first year of the war there were no attacks on refineries, in 2023 there were 4, in 2024 - 34, and in 2025 - already 88. In the first five months of 2026, Ukrainian drones hit oil refineries 33 times - more than in the same period last year (24). According to Reuters, there are almost no large refineries (with a capacity of 10 million tons or more) in central Russia that would not have suspended operations due to the strikes.
