Moscow will answer for the "barbaric escalation".
United States Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Tammy Bruce called the massive Russian shelling of Kiev an "inexplicable, dangerous and barbaric escalation." She called for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations.
She said this during a UN Security Council meeting, Ukrinform reported. She also emphasized that the US is ready to play a constructive role in case the parties are ready to negotiate.
Bruce noted that Russian strikes on Ukraine, particularly with the use of Oreshnik ballistic missiles, have killed civilians and injured more than a hundred people.
"Russia's recent massive strikes on Kiev, including the deployment of hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missiles, are an inexplicable, dangerous and barbaric escalation," she said.
Bruce added that museums, public transportation facilities, residences and other facilities have been destroyed or damaged during the Russian attacks.
She expressed condolences to the victims and emphasized that targeted attacks against civilians are "unacceptable and abhorrent."
The United States has warned Russia against strikes on Kiev
The United States has warned Russia against so-called systematic strikes on Kiev, which could cause even more casualties and further complicate prospects for peace.
The Deputy Permanent Representative also expressed "grave concern" that Russia is not honoring its obligations to protect diplomatic facilities and personnel under international law.
"We remind Russia in clear terms of its legal obligations," she emphasized, adding that "diplomacy and negotiation are the only path to lasting peace. The United States again calls for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire as a step toward a sustainable negotiated end to the war," Bruce emphasized.
She also noted that "the alternative is further escalation of violence that gets out of control - and that is unacceptable."
In the event that the parties are genuinely ready for peace, the deputy envoy said, the United States is prepared to play a constructive role.
