Rubio: Negotiations Between Russia And Ukraine Have Reached An Impasse

Washington no longer wants to waste resources on a process with no progress.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that American attempts to mediate in the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have actually reached a dead end, The Moscow Times writes.

According to Marco Rubio, Washington has tried to help the parties reach a peace agreement, but so far it has not yielded results.

"We have tried to play the role of a mediator, but so far it has not led to a fruitful result for a number of reasons. We are still willing to play that role if it can be productive," the US Secretary of State said.

He noted that the US does not want to waste time and resources on a process that does not lead to progress. He added that the US side is ready to return to active mediation if the situation changes.

The US has previously offered Russia broad concessions to achieve a result - including talk of easing sanctions, economic cooperation and even the possibility of recognizing Crimea. However, Vladimir Putin has not agreed to a compromise on territorial issues and continues to demand that he be given full control of Donbass without a fight.

Despite contacts between US and Kremlin representatives, as well as several meetings between the Russian and Ukrainian sides, no peace agreement has been reached.

Bloomberg sources earlier reported that the Kremlin was considering continuing the war for at least another year or two and was preparing a new offensive.

As for the US, it wanted to reach an agreement on Ukraine still The U.S. side was also keen on rapid progress in these talks amid the domestic political situation in the U.S. and the upcoming congressional elections. However, Putin's exaggerated demands and Ukraine's refusal to accept them made these plans unrealizable.
