The drones could have been intended to attack U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf.
Russia may have been preparing a large-scale delivery of advanced drones to Iran for possible use against the US military in the Persian Gulf.
This was reported by The Economist with reference to a confidential document received from a source.
According to the newspaper, Russia planned to transfer to Iran 5,000 short-range fiber-optic-guided drones, which are difficult to detect and jam by means of electronic warfare.
The document also talks about the possible transfer of long-range drones with Starlink satellite guidance and training of the Iranian military to work with both types of drones.
The Economist claims that the 10-page document was prepared by the Russian GRU.
It contains maps and charts of islands off the coast of Iran.
The newspaper says the plan may have been developed at the beginning of the war amid concerns about the possibility
The plan was supposedly to involve Iranian students studying at Russian universities to work with the drones.
Tajiks who speak Russian and Persian and members of the Alawite minority in Syria were also considered among the potential operators.
The Economist notes, however, that it has not been confirmed whether the plan was implemented and whether Iran received the drones in question.
