The country's cabinet must be formed within 15 days.

On Tuesday, the Lithuanian Parliament confirmed Mindaugas Sinkevičius as the new prime minister, according to Delfi.lt.

The politician from the city of Jonava became the third Social Democrat to hold the post of Prime Minister of Lithuania following the party’s victory in the 2024 parliamentary elections. He succeeded Inga Ruginienė, who last week resigned following reshuffles in the ruling coalition.

“I will strive to be a prime minister who unites rather than divides, who listens and is not afraid to make decisions,” Sinkevičius told lawmakers.

The 42-year-old politician now has 15 days to form a cabinet and prepare a government program; both documents must be agreed upon with President Gitanas Nausėda and approved by the Seimas.

Sinkevičius’s political career is closely tied to Jonava, where he has served as mayor—with some interruptions—since 2011.

In 2016, he briefly served as Minister of Economy, leaving the post less than a year later after the Social Democrats withdrew from the coalition with the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union.
