The British government has officially named the successor to John Giley. The country’s new defense minister is the experienced politician and veteran Dan Jarvis.
This was reported by Sky News.
Keir Starmer announced the appointment personally. The Prime Minister emphasized national security. The global situation calls for decisive action, and every threat will be met with a response.
“My first duty is to ensure the safety of the British people, and I will always do whatever is necessary to protect our national security,” said Sir Keir Starmer.
The head of government is confident in his choice. Jarvis is expected to strengthen London’s position on the international stage. Funding for the military is expected to continue growing.
Starmer added: “I am pleased to appoint Dan Jarvis as Secretary of State for Defense as we strengthen our armed forces and respond to the growing threats facing our country. This Labour government is delivering the most sustained increase in defense spending since the Cold War.”
Who is Dan Jarvis
This official has an extensive military background. Jarvis served as an officer in a paratrooper regiment from 1997 to 2011. He also participated in various military conflicts in the world’s most volatile hotspots.
During his service, he was deployed on challenging missions to:
Kosovo;

Jarvis’s political career began in 2011. That year, he was elected to Parliament as the representative for the Barnsley North constituency. He served as mayor of South Yorkshire for four years, which honed his skills as an administrator.
After the Labour Party’s victory in the 2024 election, he was appointed to a government post. Until today, he served as Minister of Security at the Home Office.
Less than a day ago, Defense Minister John Gilley resigned. He was dissatisfied with the funding of the British Army.
