The first round of negotiations will also begin with Moldova.
European Union member states have agreed to begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
This was reported by "RBC-Ukraine" citing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on social media platform X.
"Today, the European Union has taken a major step forward. All member states have agreed to open the first cluster of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova,” she noted.
According to von der Leyen, the first intergovernmental conference, scheduled for Monday, June 15, will launch the first cluster on the fundamentals of the accession process. It covers the core values and principles upon which the EU is built, from the rule of law to strong democratic institutions.
“This is a recognition of the determination, courage, and hard work shown by both countries in advancing reforms despite enormous challenges. And a signal that the EU’s offer of peace, stability, and opportunity is unmatched. Enlargement is a strategic choice,” she emphasized.
Reactions from Costa and Metsola
The “green light” to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova was also confirmed by European Council President António Costa.
In turn, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola emphasized that this step underscores the efforts of the two countries and their commitment to European values, despite Russia’s aggression, threats, and intimidation.
