How The Cross Of The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Saved Rescuers From A Drone

He took the blow himself.

Russia launched a drone strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra on the night of June 15. Rescue workers were on the scene from the very first moments. Then the enemy launched a second strike.

The host of “Channel 24” Sofia Nazarenko reported that as morning approached on June 15, the Russians launched another drone toward the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. State Emergency Service personnel were put in danger.

According to the director general of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Historical and Cultural Reserve, Maksym Ostapenko, the second drone flew toward the cathedral grounds around 5 a.m. The cross on the defensive tower of Ioann Kushchnik took the brunt of the impact.

“The cross may have saved the rescue workers who were operating on the grounds of the Cathedral of the Dormition. It was the cross that took the direct hit from the second Russian drone.” Because of this, the drone changed its trajectory and did not hit the rescue workers who were there,” Ostapenko said.

For now, no services are being held at the Cathedral of the Dormition. A temporary shelter is currently being installed there, after which discussions will take place on how to resume services. According to preliminary estimates, the cathedral’s restoration will take about two years.
