The German chancellor spoke about a clear message.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz saw the emergence of a “first chance for peace” between Russia and Ukraine after the leaders of the “Group of Seven” and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed on further steps.
This was reported by "20 Minuten".
What Merz said
The chancellor said that European leaders and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed next steps to end the war in Ukraine.
According to him, the parties agreed to continue supporting Ukraine while simultaneously increasing pressure on Russia.
Merz also expressed his conviction that cooperation between Europe and the U.S. in the peace process will become even closer in the future.
Trump’s Position
Separately, the chancellor noted the U.S. president’s position on the war.
“What gives us all reason to be confident are President Trump’s words: Russia must end this war. And I believe that this is a clear signal,” Merz stated.
Pressure on Russia
According to the chancellor, the discussions also touched on the issue of possible new sanctions against Russia and further steps aimed at forcing Moscow to the negotiating table.
Merz believes that Russia will not be able to achieve victory by military means, and that economic pressure and sanctions are creating the conditions for a possible peace.
