In partnership with Intel.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Apple has agreed to partner with Intel to manufacture some of its chips in the United States. This was reported by MacRumors.
Following Trump’s announcement, Intel’s stock rose 9% in premarket trading, while Apple’s stock gained 0.6%. No official comments have yet been issued by the companies regarding a possible agreement.
It was previously reported that Apple and Intel had reached a preliminary agreement under which Intel would be able to manufacture processors for Apple devices. It is expected that Intel will manufacture chips based on Apple’s designs using the same contract manufacturing model currently employed by Taiwan’s TSMC. According to media reports, this may involve certain entry-level processors, including the lower-end M-series chips used in select iPad and Mac models.
It is noted that Apple had previously not considered Intel as a manufacturer for its chips due to the company’s technological lag behind competitors, including TSMC and Samsung, as well as the strained relationship between the two companies. The situation began to change after Lip-Bu Tan was appointed CEO of Intel last year. Following the leadership change, the company has focused on developing its manufacturing business.
Apple is also seeking to diversify its supply chain, as TSMC currently remains the sole manufacturer of Apple Silicon chips. During the latest earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook reported that iPhone 17 shipments were limited due to a shortage of A19 and A19 Pro chips, which the company was unable to obtain in sufficient quantities from TSMC.
