The director of the original film may also return to work on the sequel.
American actor Jim Carrey may reprise his role as the Grinch in a sequel to the film *How the Grinch Stole Christmas*. Negotiations regarding the actor’s return to the role are being conducted by Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
According to the publication, the director of the original film, Ron Howard, may also return to work on the sequel. He will serve as director and producer of the film alongside Brian Grazer.
The sequel’s screenplay is being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, who previously worked on film adaptations of Dr. Seuss’s works.
The film *How the Grinch Stole Christmas* was released in 2000 and became the highest-grossing film of the year in the U.S., earning $260 million domestically and $345 million worldwide. The film won an Oscar for Best Makeup.
According to the analytics firm Nielsen, the film remains one of the most popular Christmas movies on streaming services. At the end of 2025, it was second only to *Home Alone* in terms of views among holiday content.
