'Nuclear Shield': US May Make A Surprise Decision On Europe

Negotiations are underway with a number of Washington's allies.

The U.S. is considering expanding the presence of nuclear weapons in Europe by placing them in more NATO countries. According to Financial Times, such discussions are being held to reaffirm to allies the reliability of U.S. security guarantees amid a decline in conventional support.

According to the publication's sources, U.S. officials are ready to discuss the deployment of relevant infrastructure outside the states where U.S. nuclear weapons carriers are already located. This could allow more countries to host dual-capable aircraft (DCA) capable of both conventional and nuclear missions.

The FT's interlocutors note that such consultations should demonstrate Washington's commitment to nuclear deterrence, even as it calls on European allies to take greater responsibility for their own defense.

The talks are being held in private and do not yet imply a mandatory renegotiation of existing nuclear sharing agreements At the same time, they have become a reaction to the concerns of European countries about the possible reduction of the American military presence on the continent.

According to the newspaper, the greatest interest in this initiative is shown by the states of NATO's eastern flank, primarily Poland and the Baltic States. Discussions are ongoing within the alliance, and the Polish authorities have previously publicly stated their readiness to deploy American nuclear weapons on their territory.
