A First In History: The Ukrainian Armed Forces Downed A Russian S-300 With An FPV Drone

This unique operation was made possible by several factors.

In July 2026, the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck a Russian S-300V air defense missile system for the first time in history using a copter-type FPV drone.

This was reported by Ukrainian Defense Forces veteran Dmytro Putyata.

According to the military official, this unique operation was made possible by several factors. Mistakes made by the Russian army played a significant role.

“The Russians are building a multi-tiered system to counter drones. It must be acknowledged that in many cases this system appears to be quite well thought out… However, in practice, it faces serious problems when implemented on the ground,” Putyata said.

According to him, Russia’s frontline air defense currently consists of two echelons of small-sized radars for detecting air targets, electronic warfare posts, air surveillance posts equipped with machine guns, mobile fire teams, and interceptor drone crews—in other words, the defense is quite substantial.

“This anti-aircraft system was supposed to be under the cover of a separate radar station crew, a group of FPV interceptor drones, and an electronic warfare post, specifically assigned to protect its area of operation. Either this was not done, or, fortunately, someone performed their duties extremely poorly,” Putyata stated.
