The Russian Foreign Ministry Lashed Out At The U.S. And Turkey

The Kremlin was alarmed by the possibility of a large shipment of U.S. weapons being transferred to Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called the planned transfer of U.S. missiles and artillery ammunition from Turkish arsenals to Ukraine—which has been approved by the U.S. State Department—"opening Pandora's box," according to The Moscow Times.

This statement was made by the department’s official spokesperson Maria Zakharova. According to her, the actions of Ankara and Washington, which “use peace-seeking rhetoric” while simultaneously supplying weapons to Kyiv, “inevitably erode mutual trust, especially against the backdrop of repeated assurances by Turkish officials that Turkey is avoiding ‘lethal’ deliveries to Kyiv.”

Last week, the U.S. State Department notified Congress of its intention to authorize Turkey to transfer to Ukraine, from its own stockpiles, 12 M270 MLRS launchers, 70 M39 ATACMS missiles, more than 2,500 M26 unguided rockets with cluster warheads, and 47,000 M509A1 cluster artillery shells from its own stockpiles to Ukraine. Zakharova stated that the transfer of this arsenal “cannot in any way seriously affect the course” of the special military operation according to the Russian scenario, but it will lead to “serious damage to Russia’s bilateral relations with Washington and Ankara.”

According to the ministry spokesperson, if the deliveries are approved, Ukraine will attempt to “escalate the casualties and destruction” in Russia. She stated that it remains unclear “what motivated the parties to the deal—namely, the U.S. and Turkish authorities—to decide to open yet another ‘Pandora’s box,’” which will lead to the “agony” of the Ukrainian state and claim “even more human lives.”

In this regard, the Russian Foreign Ministry has demanded explanations from the U.S. and Turkey. “It is not too late to take a sober look at the situation,” Zakharova emphasized.
