The U.S. Has Displaced Russia From India's Liquefied Natural Gas Market

All of Asia's major economies have increased their LNG imports.

In June 2026, India increased its imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 28% compared to June 2025, reaching 2.659 million metric tons. This is the highest monthly volume since October 2024. This was reported by "Interfax-Ukraine".

From January through June, India increased its LNG imports by 7% compared to the same period last year, reaching 12.844 million metric tons.

It is noted that in June, at the peak of summer demand, all of Asia’s major economies—China, Japan, South Korea, and India—increased their LNG imports. This gas was effectively diverted from the European market, where LNG imports fell by 18% during the same period.

“Due to its geographic location, India traditionally receives significant volumes of gas from the Middle East; however, supplies from there have declined due to hostilities,” the media reports. “The situation is also exacerbated by weather conditions—a heatwave more intense than last year’s.” In June, shipments partially resumed: six shipments of LNG were received from the UAE and two from Qatar, accounting for 20% of the month’s total.”

The United States remained the largest supplier of LNG to India in June—562,000 metric tons, or 21% of total imports—along with Nigeria, Oman, and Angola.

By the end of 2025, India ranked fifth in the world in terms of LNG imports, trailing only China, Japan, South Korea, and France.

As previously reported, India rejected Russia’s offer to sell LNG subject to U.S. sanctions—despite a shortage caused by tensions in the Middle East.
