Details of the visit have been released.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will arrive in the U.S. on an official visit next month—his first in 11 years. However, he will skip one of the political events in New York.

This was reported by Politico.

According to four people familiar with the Chinese leader’s schedule, his visit will not include a trip to New York to address the UN General Assembly.

The UN General Debate is scheduled to begin on September 22. During this week-long session, world leaders will gather to deliver speeches and hold parallel meetings with U.S. government officials.

However, instead of participating in this and other events, Xi Jinping will limit his presence to a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on September 24.

“Xi Jinping will most likely arrive late in the evening on September 23—he will not attend the UN General Assembly and will depart on the 25th. He will have only one day of meetings at the White House—September 24,” said one of the sources.

Politico reports that the White House has confirmed that Xi Jinping will visit Washington on September 24, but officials there declined to comment on any other possible events on the Chinese leader’s schedule during his stay in the U.S.

There has been widespread discussion within Washington’s diplomatic community that Xi Jinping will use the opportunity to attend the UN to present China’s plans for peaceful international development as a counterweight to the ongoing U.S. war against Iran.

“When the summit date of September 24 was initially announced, people pointed out that the Chinese may have proposed that date so that he could also visit New York to attend the UN General Assembly,” said an EU diplomat in Washington.

Diplomats in New York also noted that Beijing had not sent an advance team to the city, as would normally be expected ahead of any visit by Xi Jinping.

The publication added that, as of now, neither the Chinese Embassy nor the U.S. Mission to the UN in New York has responded to requests for comment.
