"The Test Results Literally Screamed, 'We Can't Wait!'"

Doctors in Minsk saved a girl with a diagnosis that is unique in Belarus.

In Minsk, doctors saved a girl from Grodno who had an extremely rare condition—non-parasitic chyluria, in which lymph enters the urinary system. This is a unique condition for Belarus, and even in the global medical literature, only a handful of similar cases in children have been described: reported by the Health Committee of the Minsk City Executive Committee.

The girl was treated at the 2nd City Children’s Clinical Hospital in Minsk. According to urologist Ekaterina Solodkaya, the patient was admitted with a diagnosis that Belarusian specialists had previously encountered only in medical literature.

“She came to us with such a ‘beautiful’ diagnosis—one we’d only ever seen in books. The test results literally screamed, ‘We can’t wait!’” the doctor said.

At first, the doctors tried to treat the girl conservatively, but the therapy did not help. After that, a decision was made to perform surgery. Following the treatment, the child’s condition was stabilized.

“Colleagues from different regions and countries call us, asking questions and seeking clarification, because this is a very rare disease, and in 95% of cases, it occurs as a complication of a parasitic infection. Global statistics show that only 5% of cases of this disease are non-parasitic in nature. This is a unique case for our country,” said Elena Lyashevich, the hospital’s chief physician.

Doctors note that non-parasitic chyluria in children is an extremely rare condition; only isolated cases have been described in the literature.

Chyluria occurs when an abnormal connection forms between the lymphatic and urinary systems, causing lymph to enter the urine. As a result, the body loses fats and other important substances, which gradually disrupts biochemical parameters and the functioning of internal organs.

A typical sign of chyluria is milky-white urine due to the presence of lymph. The condition can also lead to weight loss, edema, renal colic, and other complications.

In mild cases, the disease is treated with diet and medication. If this does not help, sclerotherapy or surgery is performed. According to data provided by the hospital, the effectiveness of surgical treatment can reach 98%.
