An FSB Major General Was Found Dead In Moscow

A "wave of deaths" among high-ranking security officials continues in Russia. On August 20, retired FSB Major General Igor Laptev was found dead in Moscow; he reportedly committed suicide.

He was the head of a company that supplied software and equipment to Russian security agencies. This is reported by “Obozrevatel” reports, citing Russian media.

What is known

According to reports in the Russian media, the body of 83-year-old Igor Laptev, a retired FSB major general, was found in his apartment on Verkhnyaya Krasnoselskaya Street the day before, on August 20.

“He took his own life,” claim propagandists from *Moskovsky Komsomolets*, who were the first to report the death of the former high-ranking security official.

The propagandists did not fail to mention that Laptev participated in the Soviet Union’s war of aggression against Afghanistan and subsequently served for a long time in the FSB, where he “dealt with issues of information security.”

Laptev also worked for a time in the tax police and even held the post of Deputy Minister of Taxes and Levies of the Russian Federation.

Starting in 1998, he chaired the board of directors of the company “Informtekhnika i Svyaz,” which later became part of the “Informtekhnika” group of companies.

“Moskovsky Komsomolets” refrained from reporting on what Laptev’s company did. The Russian opposition publication “SOTA” did so instead.

“The company produces computer software and hardware. Publicly available databases list the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the St. Petersburg telephone exchange, and others as its largest contractors,” the report noted.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, there has been a series of suicides among generals in Russia’s security agencies. In May, 87-year-old Colonel General Stanislav Petrov—the former commander of the Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces—died in Moscow. His body was found in an apartment in the House on the Embankment. According to RBC, Petrov had participated in the cleanup efforts following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and was seriously ill, while “Gazeta.Ru” reported on a possible suicide theory.

In February 2023, 72-year-old Police Major General Vladimir Makarov was found dead in the Moscow region. He had served as deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Main Directorate for Combating Extremism and had been relieved of that position shortly before his death due to his age. TASS reported that Makarov had taken his own life.

In July 2022, retired FSB Major General Yevgeny Lobachev died in Moscow. His body was found on a stair landing in a building on Kachalinskaya Street. Lobachev was 76 years old. According to TASS, citing law enforcement sources, the cause of death was suicide.

A month earlier, retired SVR Major General Lev Sotskov, aged 90, was found dead in Moscow. RBC reported that Sotskov’s body was discovered in his apartment on Novatorov Street. An award pistol was found nearby.
