For The Third Month In A Row, Russian Generals Have Been Throwing The Army Into A Record Number Of “human Wave Attacks”

The assaults intensified after Putin vowed to capture the Donbas by the end of the year.

The number of “assault operations” carried out by the Russian army in Ukraine in July set a record for the third consecutive month, according to calculations by the Ukrainian OSINT project DeesState.

According to its data, Russian generals ordered the Russian army to launch 8,000 assaults on Ukrainian positions last month. The number of “assault operations” increased by approximately 11% compared to June, by 14% compared to May, and by 60% compared to winter and early spring.

On average, Russian units carried out 258 assaults each day, compared to 167 in January–April, according to DeepState’s calculations. Despite this, the Russian Federation’s military advance continued to stagnate: last month, they expanded the territory under their control by only 88 square kilometers; the month before, by 57 square kilometers; and they ended May with a net territorial loss of 11 square kilometers. By comparison: in January–April, the Russian army captured 126–245 square kilometers, and at the end of last year—about 500 square kilometers.

The Russian military leadership is in a hurry: according to sources close to the Kremlin cited by Bloomberg, generals from the General Staff have promised President Vladimir Putin that by the end of the year they will be able to fully capture the Donetsk region, where about 17% of the territory remains outside Russian control, including a 50-kilometer belt of fortress cities—Konstantinovka, Druzhkivka, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk. A number of Russian military officials, however, consider the timeline presented to Putin to be unrealistic and believe that the war for Donbas will drag on into 2027, Bloomberg sources said.

Even at the fastest pace of the Russian offensive currently recorded in statistics, Putin’s army will not be able to capture the Donetsk region in the foreseeable future, according to military analyst Yan Matveev. “If you consider the losses the Russian army is suffering for such modest gains, and what’s happening on the home front, it becomes clear that this is a one-way path—into the abyss,” he adds.

Despite the stalled offensive, the massive use of drones, and long-range strikes on Russian territory, according to Bloomberg sources, Putin continues to believe he is winning the war and, instead of making concessions, is only toughening his demands. Putin, the agency’s sources claimed, believes that the U.S. has violated the Anchorage agreements and is no longer willing to settle for just the Donetsk region; instead, he wants full control over the other Ukrainian regions annexed in 2022—the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. The Luhansk region is already under nearly 100 percent Russian control.
