Commotion At The Belarus-Russia Border

Customs officers are "ransacking" luggage, and volunteer patrols are on duty along the detour routes.
At the border between Belarus and Russia, inspections of passenger cars have been stepped up. Drivers report thorough inspections on the Moscow–Minsk highway, and patrols of Russian “volunteer militias” have appeared on bypass roads and forest roads, according to the Telegram channel MAYDAY.TEAM.
According to human rights activists, in late July, about half a kilometer from the Russian “Krasnaya Gorka” border crossing on the Belarusian side, approximately five passenger cars were stopped. Customs officers spread their contents out on the grass by the roadside and conducted a thorough inspection of the passengers’ personal belongings. The vehicles were registered in Belarus.
Previously, minibuses returning from shopping trips to Moscow’s “Sadovod” market were the ones primarily subjected to enhanced inspections along this route.
There are no Belarusian border checkpoints on the border with Russia, but customs authorities carry out inspections.
In addition, on detour routes, drivers may encounter members of the “Voluntary People’s Militia for the Protection of Russia’s State Border.” These units were established in the border regions of the Smolensk Oblast of the Russian Federation under the auspices of the regional border guard administration of the FSB.
The militias were formed in 2019, and during the coronavirus pandemic, they were supposed to be deployed to monitor detour routes. For a long time, they were effectively inactive; however, it has now come to light that militia members are being deployed to patrol forest roads.
