Politico: The U.S. Is Stepping Up Intelligence Activities In Cuba

Washington has sent additional spies and agents to the island.
The U.S. is expanding its intelligence capabilities in Cuba, including by sending American spies and agents to the island, in the hope of bringing about reforms or regime change, according to Politico reports, citing sources.
One of the sources claims that the U.S. recently sent additional intelligence operatives and agents to the island, but declined to disclose the scope of the operation or the agencies involved. A second source described the developments as a strengthening of the CIA’s “presence” in Cuba.
As Politico notes, such actions could precede various scenarios—ranging from attempts to persuade Cuban officials and citizens to speak out against the authorities to a possible military operation. One of the sources called the intelligence buildup an important tactical move that could theoretically pave the way for military intervention, while emphasizing that there are no concrete plans yet.
The source also told Politico that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump intends to use “all traditional tools,” including the resources of the intelligence community, to bring about change in Cuba, while the president continues to “give preference to diplomacy.”
Although Trump had previously stated that Washington had no plans for military action against Cuba, since it would “fall on its own,” he subsequently toughened his rhetoric, including by stating that the republic is “hanging by a thread” and that the U.S. has no choice but to “come in and blow the place up.”
Havana, for its part, began preparing to repel a possible intervention, and as early as March, the Central Army of Cuba (one of the three main regional commands of the Revolutionary Armed Forces’ ground forces) reported the start of intensive training for its air defense units.
