A North Korean Missile Unit Has Been Deployed In Western Russia

A North Korean missile unit has begun to be deployed in western Russia, and it is likely to be equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers capable of striking Ukraine. This was reported by a representative of Ukraine’s military intelligence, Andriy Chernyak, to the agency Reuters.
It is known that since late 2023, Russia has launched dozens of North Korean ballistic missiles at Ukraine; however, the deployment of North Korean missile forces would mark an expansion of the already extensive military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
According to Chernyak, Russia plans to station a missile unit consisting of about 90 North Korean military personnel in the Voronezh region in western Russia as part of the 112th Missile Brigade.
He emphasized that North Korea has already sent a new shipment of 40 KN-23 and KN-24 missiles to Russia along with personnel, but the final deployment configuration and the total number of missiles will be agreed upon during high-level talks next month.
Chernyak said that Russia expects the deployment to include 120 North Korean ballistic missiles and six launchers. It is not yet clear exactly what role the North Koreans will play in Russian missile operations.
“The deployment described by Chernyak appears to coincide with Russia’s launch last week of the first two North Korean missiles over Ukraine since last August,” Reuters reported.
In particular, Rob Lee , a senior fellow at the Institute for Foreign Policy Research—a Philadelphia-based think tank —stressed that North Korean capabilities pose a serious threat to Kyiv.
“Missile defense is one of Ukraine’s most vulnerable points, so any increase in the number of ballistic missiles it has to deal with will pose an even greater challenge,” he stressed.
Lee added that the state of Ukraine’s air defense this winter will be a particular cause for concern, as Russia may once again launch a powerful strike against the power grid, as it has done in previous years.
According to Ukrainian authorities, last week a North Korean missile destroyed a residential building in the village of Radushnoye (Dnipropetrovsk Oblast), killing at least five members of a single family.
Chernyak emphasized that this strike was the first recorded instance of North Korean ballistic missiles being used since August 2025, and that missiles from a new batch of 40 units were used to carry it out.
He added that there are currently about 9,500 North Korean military personnel in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, which borders Ukraine, but that they are not yet directly involved in military operations against Ukraine.
