A TASS source in the emergency services reported on the fire at the Central Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (TsNIImash) in Korolev, near Moscow. According to the source, the fire was caused by human error. According to the "Moscow" news agency, firefighters in the Moscow region requested assistance from their colleagues in the capital.

The cause of the fire has not been disclosed; however, almost simultaneously with the news of the fire, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced the destruction of three UAVs flying toward Moscow. In addition, Rosaviatsiya restricted operations at Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports.

Since 2022, TsNIImash has been subject to sanctions by the European Union, the United States, and a number of other countries for aiding the war against Ukraine.
