A Container Ship Carrying Five Metric Tons Of Cocaine Was Intercepted In Portugal

About 1,185 km from Lisbon, police boarded a container ship carrying five metric tons of cocaine. The vessel was en route to Europe from Latin America. This was reported on the website of the Portuguese National Police.
Two unregistered passengers were also found on board; a crew member suspected of involvement in the criminal scheme was arrested.
The Portuguese Navy and Air Force participated in the operation.
“Two foreign nationals were found and detained inside the vessel, and several items used in navigation, the dumping of drugs at sea, and the transportation of cocaine were seized,” according to a statement released by the press service.
Earlier, Europol Acting Director Jürgen Ebner stated that European authorities had stepped up efforts to intercept cocaine smugglers at major ports. However, the region risks facing a “waterbed effect,” where tightening measures in one area may simply shift the problem elsewhere. After the crackdown in Dutch ports, criminal groups switched to transporting drugs across the Atlantic.
One of the key locations for such operations is the area around the Azores and the Canary Islands, making Portugal and Spain the main entry points for cocaine into Europe.
