A Helicopter Carrying Trump Nearly Collided With An Airplane Over Washington

Due to communication issues.

On Tuesday, a military helicopter carrying U.S. President Donald Trump came within less than 1.5 km of a passenger plane over Washington. The incident was caused by a communication problem.

This was reported by The New York Times.

According to the publication, the incident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. on August 4, as Trump was flying from the White House to Joint Base Andrews. This was the first leg of a planned trip to Los Angeles.

According to audio recordings, before takeoff, the crew of Marine One (with the U.S. president on board) attempted three times to warn air traffic controllers in the control tower at National Airport that there were three minutes remaining before takeoff.

Apparently, the air traffic controller did not hear these messages, and the helicopter continued on its way. This resulted in Marine One ending up in the flight path of an Envoy Air passenger plane.

Two sources, familiar with the preliminary findings of the Federal Aviation Administration, said that at the point of closest approach, the helicopter was 0.8 miles horizontally and 700 feet vertically from the plane (a total of less than 1.5 km).

Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
