Lexus Turned Out To Be The Most Resilient Luxury Brand

The Japanese model outperformed its German competitors.

If you want to buy a used luxury car without breaking the bank on repairs, Lexus seems like a much safer bet than BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Experts reached this conclusion after analyzing data on more than 395 million cars, according to Autoblog (translation by Charter97.org).

Lexus cars had a 14.4% chance of exceeding 400,000 kilometers. By comparison, Mercedes-Benz ranked only sixth among luxury brands with a rate of 2.6%, while BMW came in ninth with just 0.5%.

The average rate for all premium brands was 3.4%. Older Lexus LS models perform particularly well; even decades later, they can still be found in excellent condition.

One explanation is the simpler design of Japanese cars. German brands more often use complex technologies that enhance vehicle performance, but this also increases the likelihood of potential breakdowns. According to a separate study, servicing a BMW between six and ten years old costs an average of $9,300, compared to $5,600 for a Lexus.

“A ranking of the most durable brands can be a useful guide when choosing a used car with high mileage,” said Karl Brauer, an analyst.

High mileage does not necessarily mean inevitable problems for BMW or Mercedes-Benz. However, owners of these cars often have to spend more on maintenance and repairs.
