In Serbia, Students Have Challenged President Vučić In The Election Race

In Serbia, the student movement has officially entered the election race, challenging incumbent President Aleksandar Vučić, and held a protest march through downtown Belgrade.

University students, who have led anti-government protests in Serbia for nearly two years, officially submitted the “Student List—Students Win” candidate list on Monday, September 14, to run in the early parliamentary elections.

The student movement submitted its electoral list to state election authorities after marching through downtown Belgrade. Several thousand people joined the march, according to the publication.

The October 25 election is considered a serious test for President Aleksandar Vučić and his Serbian Progressive Party, which has held power in the country since 2012.

The first trigger for the protests was the tragedy at the train station on November 1, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people in northern Serbia.

Students demanded that those responsible be held accountable for the collapse of a concrete canopy in the city of Novi Sad, claiming that corruption had led to substandard repair work on the building.

Vučić has served as Serbia’s prime minister or president since 2014. He announced that he would step down effective September 27 but would run for prime minister in the upcoming elections. Prior to this, the Serbian president dissolved parliament and called for early elections to the National Assembly on October 25.
