Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, ports, oil depots, and warehouses are having an increasingly noticeable impact on the Russian economy. The war is gradually seeping into the daily lives of Russians, and the consequences of the attacks are becoming palpable even for those far from the front lines, writes Le Monde.
Putin himself acknowledged the serious damage caused by Ukrainian attacks. According to him, strikes on infrastructure this summer have already inflicted significant losses on the Russian economy.
“They have caused us real damage,” Putin said on September 1 at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Tianjin.
At the same time, the Russian leader tried to reassure that the situation does not pose a critical threat. However, he then described the preliminary damage assessment as quite significant.
“The total damage, according to our preliminary estimates, is quite substantial—about 1% of GDP,” Putin said.
The attacks on oil refining infrastructure proved to be a particularly serious consequence.““The Ukrainian strikes have reduced Russia’s oil refining capacity by 20–30%. This is the first large-scale disruption of this kind since the start of the full-scale war in February 2022,” the publication writes.
It is not only energy facilities that are being targeted. Ukrainian drones have attacked ports, oil storage facilities, and logistics centers belonging to major Russian e-commerce companies.
The consequences of the war are becoming increasingly evident within Russia itself. With the September 18–20 elections approaching, attacks on infrastructure are creating an additional economic and political challenge for the Kremlin.
