Russia Has Imposed A Curfew In Areas Bordering Estonia

Tallinn warned against an “unusual practice.”

Russia has imposed a ten-day curfew in the Kingisepp and Slantsy districts on the border with Estonia, near Narva. This curfew restricts people’s movement and stay in the border zone.

Thus, stricter restrictions are in effect within Russia’s five-kilometer border zone than in Estonia. From September 16 to 26, the FSB imposed additional temporary restrictions on presence and movement. While fishermen are allowed to fish on the Estonian bank of the Narva River, it is prohibited to be on the Russian bank.

“South of the Narva Reservoir, any movement on the river by watercraft is prohibited, as is the presence of people on the shore. After dark, it is prohibited to be in this zone outside of populated areas, including in vehicles. In addition, hunting is prohibited within a five-kilometer zone along the border,” said Andris Viltsin, a spokesperson for the Estonian Border Guard.

Viltsin emphasized that such measures are not standard practice, but they cannot be called exceptional either. According to him, the Police and Border Guard Board, together with other agencies, is monitoring the situation on Estonia’s eastern border and is prepared to respond to any potential incidents if necessary. The Border Guard spokesperson suggested that the tightening of measures may indicate a certain degree of uncertainty on the part of Russia, which is concerned about the security of its border.

Estonian Minister of the Interior Igor Taro also stated that there is no immediate danger to the country and that the threat assessment has not changed; therefore, Estonia will not take any action on its part. He added that there had been speculation about a possible general mobilization in Russia and that the country is in a difficult situation.

The Russian side claims that the purpose of the restrictions is to strengthen the protection of the state border. The day before, one person illegally crossed the border from Russia into Estonia and was detained. The Estonian Border Guard notes that it is practically impossible to completely seal off a border of this length and prevent all illegal crossings.
