In China, Two Generals Were Expelled From The Military And The Party For Disloyalty

Deputy Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the PRC Zhang Yuxia and member of the Central Military Commission and Chief of the Joint Staff Liu Zhenli have been expelled from the ranks of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the People’s Liberation Army of China (PLA). This was reported by Reuters.

“Political and economic violations were intertwined, and corrupt self-enrichment coexisted with dereliction of duty and abuse of power,”— the Politburo stated after a meeting chaired by Xi Jinping.

The investigation into the generals began in January. In late August, the generals were expelled from the Central Military Commission. The generals are accused of deviating from the CCP’s line, forming cliques and factions, failing to ensure strict party discipline and oversight of personnel and family members, as well as corruption. The agency notes that Zhang Yuxia was one of the few officers with actual combat experience and had long been considered a close associate of Xi Jinping.

Since coming to power in 2012, Chinese leader Xi Jinping has launched one of the most extensive campaigns in the country’s modern history to combat corruption and disciplinary violations. Millions of employees within China’s bureaucratic system have come under investigation, and dozens of high-ranking party, government, and military officials have been identified and purged. In recent years, the purge has focused primarily on the military. As a result, of the seven members of the former military council, only two remain active, including Xi Jinping himself, according to Reuters.
