The U.S. Is Calling For Sanctions Against The Son Of One Of Putin's Allies
Russian businessman Vitaly Yusufov is building a skyscraper in California.
Residents of Menlo Park, California, are calling on U.S. authorities to impose sanctions against Russian businessman Vitaly Yusufov, the son of former Russian Energy Minister Igor Yusufov, according to New York Post (translation by Charter97.org).
The reason for this was a large-scale development project on a plot of land covering approximately 2.8 hectares. Yusufov purchased it in 2019 for $72 million. The plan calls for the construction of three towers with 665 apartments, a hotel, offices, and a kindergarten.
The tallest tower is expected to reach 140 meters. This would make it the tallest building on the stretch of land between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Yusufov is already subject to Ukrainian sanctions. His father, former Russian Energy Minister Igor Yusufov, has already been sanctioned by Ukraine and Canada.
Some Menlo Park residents intend to appeal to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States and seek action from U.S. financial authorities.
“I urge you to fight against the ‘80 Willow’ project, despite the risk of enormous legal costs. This project will destroy our beautiful city,” said a local resident.
However, the Menlo Park City Council has not yet contacted the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control regarding possible sanctions against Yusufov.
The project has also drawn the attention of California Attorney General Rob Bonta. His office stated that the municipality may have unlawfully granted the building permit.
