Portnikov Outlined Putin's Real Goals In The War In Ukraine

Knowing this spares us from dangerous illusions.

Journalist Vitaly Portnikov described how he sees Ukraine’s salvation coming at the hands of its own citizens: “We must act like a mother who, to save her child, threw him into a ravine on the road to Babi Yar. We must save our homeland in this way. If we lull ourselves into thinking that tomorrow Whitcoff and Kushner will arrive and persuade Putin—telling him that we need to start negotiations and end the war—we’ll never see that happen, which is why I keep saying that we must not harbor any illusions.”

The political analyst spoke about this in an interview with Espresso TV at YouTube.

“In order for there to be genuine negotiations, we must clearly understand the enemy’s objectives. The enemy’s goals are the destruction of the Ukrainian state and the destruction of the Ukrainian people, and this is a very important point, because the destruction of the Ukrainian state has always been the Russians’ goal, but the total annihilation of the Ukrainian people—the so-called ‘final solution’ to the Ukrainian question, modeled after the Jewish one—has never been the case, because the Russians considered Ukrainians sufficiently loyal to their rule,” Portnikov explained.

The columnist also outlined the Kremlin’s real goals regarding the war in Ukraine: “From the perspective of a Russian like Putin, a Ukrainian is an unfinished Russian who simply needs to be finished off. Years of war have convinced Russians that this is not the case. They’ve concluded that there shouldn’t be a state, and that people who consider themselves Ukrainians shouldn’t be here either. You just have to realize this. We also need to realize that negotiations during a war always take place when there is a real basis for them. That basis, to start with, is a ceasefire.”
