Economist: Lukashenka's Appointments Remind Me Old Anecdote
LEU MARHOLIN

Why did the governor appoint a forester as Vice Prime Minister for Petroleum Affairs?

Economist Leu Marholin commented to Radio Racyja on the extraordinary appointment in the government.

Yury Nazarau was appointed Deputy Prime Minister charged with energy resources. Prior to that, he headed Bellesbumprom for six years.

- When the Belarusian ruler removes one deputy prime minister, it means he has some kind of complaints. Probably thinks that another person can better deal with this case. But, in my opinion, the situation turns out to be like in an old anecdote, when they decided to increase attendance in a public house by swapping beds.

If the oil refining industry has not started working before that, then we can't expect it to work in the future either. But it seems that Lukashenka has decided that a new epoch in the oil industry of Belarus is beginning, which means that new people are needed there as well.

- Wouldn't it be more logical to appoint a person from the oil sector, not a specialist who has worked in forestry all his life, to this position?

- In fact, managers are more useful in such high positions. There are enough specialists, consultants, experts who can give explanations on any issues, but here you need a manager - a person who has good organizational skills.
