The Russian dictator continues to hold meetings and participate in events, but does not publicly address this topic.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has not commented for a week on the large-scale fire at the Tuapse oil terminal, which broke out after the AFU strikes, and the "acid" smog that spread over hundreds of kilometers. Despite the scale of the disaster that has engulfed almost the entire Black Sea coast of Russia, which environmentalists have described as a "major ecological disaster," the head of state continues to hold meetings and participate in celebrations, but does not publicly address the topic, reports The Moscow Times.
The first strike on Tuapse was carried out by Ukrainian drones a week ago, on the night of April 16. After that raid, a fire broke out at the refinery, killing two local residents and injuring seven others, and a state of emergency was declared in the city. On the same day, the president, according to a report by his press service, discussed with the head of Karachaevo-Cherkessia, Rashid Temrezov, measures to support the participants in the SWO.
The next day, while firefighters continued to fight the fire at the Tuapse marine terminal and rescuers were removing the rubble of houses damaged by the AFU attack, Putin spoke to members of the Russian Security Council about mixed marriages of Russians and cultural cooperation with CIS countries.
The Kuban authorities reported that the fire in the port of Tuapse had been eliminated on April 19, but on the morning of April 20, AFU drones again attacked the Tuapse oil refinery and hit oil tanks, resulting in another major fire. At the same time, the Operational Headquarters reported a large oil slick in the sea near Tuapse, which appeared after the strike on April 16. Oil also got into the river of the same name.
Putin on April 20 discussed with Penza governor Oleg Melnichenko the increase in production of sugar beet and turkey meat, as well as the project of reconstruction of Penza airport.
In the meantime, the scale of the emergency was growing: in Tuapse there were "oil rains" that covered the streets of the city with an oily film and oil clots, and the smog from the fire stretched for 300 km and reached Stavropol, Sochi and Anapa. Rospotrebnadzor urged Tuapse residents to stay indoors, close windows and wear masks. The city canceled classes in schools and kindergartens. Environmentalists have warned that the spreading smog carries the risk of acid rain in the regions over which it passes.
On April 21, however, Putin gave a speech at a meeting with municipal officials and took part in the forum "Small Motherland is the Strength of Russia," where he awarded a "hero of the SWO" who became a deputy in the Kaluga region, and urged Russians to work "for the front." Yesterday he received the head of Seychelles Patrick Ermini in the Kremlin and met with the athletes, drinking champagne with them.
In the meantime, environmentalist Yevgeny Vitishko, who is a member of the Kuban Governor's Council working group, said that what is happening in the region is a "major environmental disaster." "In my opinion, its consequences are much sadder than the fuel oil spill near Anapa [in December-2024]," he told a local publication. And Tuapse residents told of stray animals covered in fuel oil, also calling the situation a "catastrophe."
