A new monument will be erected in downtown Kyiv.
In downtown Kyiv, where a monument to Lenin once stood, a monument to Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa will be erected.
This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a speech marking Constitution Day.
The monument may be erected at the intersection of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Khreshchatyk Street, where a statue of Lenin once stood before it was torn down in 2013 by participants in the Revolution of Dignity.
Zelenskyy, as reported by New Voice, noted that Mazepa was an outstanding statesman and military leader, as well as the head of the Cossack state.
“For centuries, Russia has smeared his name, striving to make Ukrainians view their own history through the eyes of others, convincing our people that Mazepa was a traitor. That is a lie. And without a doubt, the stature of this figure deserves a full-scale monument in our nation’s capital. I believe there is an ideal place for it. And I am confident that where Lenin fell, Mazepa will stand firm,” said the president.
He also announced that a bust of Mazepa will now be placed in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, as he was one of its patrons.
