Economist Lipschutz: The Kremlin Has Made A Decision On Crimea

Putin won't save people.

Putin doesn't care about the Russians stranded in Crimea, which is why he has no intention of organizing a “green corridor” to evacuate them, according to Russian economist Igor Lipits. In his view, asking Ukraine for permission to evacuate Russian citizens would be a humiliating move for the Kremlin leader, so he’ll prefer to pretend that everything is fine and later shift the blame onto Kyiv.

Igor Lipsiç discussed this in an interview with blogger Mark Feigin on YouTube.

The expert shared his assessment of the situation in Crimea:

“What’s happening in Crimea is starting to resemble the siege of Leningrad, because the water supply is poor and problems with electricity are beginning, since the Ukrainians have launched successful strikes against energy infrastructure. Communications, with the exception of the Crimean Bridge, are practically cut off. The lines of cars leaving Crimea are setting records. Russians suddenly realized they need to flee immediately. It’s hilariously absurd. This is precisely an indicator of just how high the level of idiocy is in Russia. It’s horrifying to watch when people say, “What could possibly be happening in Crimea? It’s a resort region, and they used to send children to ‘Artek.’”

Lipsits then explained why, in his opinion, Putin will not rescue Russian citizens who find themselves “trapped” in Crimea:

“For humanitarian reasons, people should be evacuated, and those who can should walk across the bridge. That’s all clear, but it will never happen. Putin will say that people died—and that they died because of the Ukrainian side. Putin couldn’t care less how many Crimeans die. I realize this sounds terrible, and people will never agree with it, but the fact is he absolutely doesn’t care how many children and elderly people in Crimea die because there are no medicines, because there’s no electricity, and because nothing is working in the hospitals. He is completely indifferent to all of this. He is waging his own war, and the Russian people are mere expendable resources.”
