Today Belarusian Opposition Leader Mikalai Statkevich Celebrates His Birthday
MIKALAI STATKEVICH

Freedom to the hero!

Belarusian opposition leader, political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich is celebrating his 65th birthday behind bars imprisoned on totally trumped-up charges. We remind that the illegal regime has fabricated a criminal case against the hero of the Belarusian resistance.

Mikalai Statkevich was born on August 12, 1956 in the village of Liadna, Slutsk district, Minsk region. He is a graduate of the Minsk Higher Engineering School of antiaircraft missile defense. Defended his candidate thesis and was a lecturer at the Higher Engineering School of antiaircraft missile defense. He is a candidate of technical sciences, lieutenant colonel in the reserve. On August 20, 1991 he publicly opposed the putsch in Moscow. At the same time he announced the creation of Belarusian Military Association.

Mikalai Statkevich was one of the presidential candidates in the 2010 elections. He was arrested after a mass protest against the rigged presidential election on December 19, 2010.

He spent almost five years behind bars and was released only on August 22, 2015.

Statkevich continued to fight against the Lukashenka regime and took an active part in all protests.

On May 31, 2020, Statkevich was detained on his way to a picket to collect signatures for nominating Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya as a presidential candidate, taken to the Leninski District Police Department and arrested for 15 days for participating in an unsanctioned protest. Later Statkevich's arrest was prolonged twice and on June 29th a criminal case was brought against him for alleged preparation of mass riots.
