Macron Calls For An Emergency G7 Meeting

In the coming weeks, the G7 countries will discuss measures to address the rapid rise in energy prices, including the possible release of strategic oil reserves. The G7 meeting was initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, according to Politico.

“A G7 meeting on energy issues will take place in the coming weeks with the aim of expanding cooperation and preventing undue tensions between G7 countries and our key partners,” the French leader said at a press conference on Friday.

In recent weeks, oil prices have risen significantly amid the war in the Middle East and threats to the transport of crude oil through key maritime routes.

The price of Brent crude was above $100 per barrel on Friday, as the market continued to factor in the risks of further supply disruptions.

The president’s statement came after a meeting at the Élysée Palace with the leaders of France’s major political parties and presidential candidates.

The meeting addressed the international situation, Russia’s war against Ukraine, the conflict in the Middle East, and the implications of these crises for the French economy and energy market.

Macron described the current situation as serious and called on political forces to remain united.
At the meeting with political leaders, Macron also announced the strengthening of security measures around critical infrastructure and defense industry facilities.
According to him, France is facing increasingly frequent cyberattacks and the threat of hybrid operations by Russia. The president instructed the government to prepare measures to strengthen the protection of critical facilities against possible attacks using drones and cyber means.
