Lloyd Austin spoke at a press conference in Poland after his visit to Kyiv.
US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has said that the US wants to see Russia weakened.
According to CNN, he said this at a press conference in Poland after a visit to Kyiv.
"We want Russia to be weakened to the point where it cannot do what it did during the invasion of Ukraine," he said.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki later explained the Pentagon chief's statement. She said Austin's statement was consistent with the administration's longstanding goal of preventing Moscow from absorbing Ukraine.
"I would say it's consistent with our point of view. The president's point of view and Austin's point of view is that we are going to do everything we can to thwart President Putin's desire to conquer Ukraine, to seize its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Two months ago he had aspirations to go beyond that," she said.
We remind you that after the visit, the Pentagon chief also said that the USA believes that Ukraine can win the war against Russia. All that is needed for this is the right equipment and proper support.
