The earthquake caused a tsunami. The wave with the highest height of 1.2 m was observed in the city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture. The tsunami can hit the coast several times. A nuclear power plant is located in Ishikawa Prefecture in the city of Shiku. Both reactors at the NPP are deactivated. The operator of the station checks whether earthquakes have affected it.

Local authorities in Ishikawa Prefecture report the destruction of several houses and power line poles in the city of Suhu, and there are also collapses in Wajima.
Trains have been suspended in a region threatened by a tsunami.
The Japanese government has stated that there are no threats to the nuclear power plant.
Waves 80 cm high were recorded in Toyama Prefecture and 40 cm in Niigata Prefecture.
