Head Of Lithuanian Interior Ministry Supports Closure Of Two More Checkpoints On Border With Belarus

Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite supports the idea of closing two more of the four checkpoints on the border with Belarus. She believes that such a measure will allow the Miadininkai checkpoint (from the Belarusian side - Kamenny Log) to be used more efficiently, reports BNS.

"We have really excellent infrastructure in Miadininkai, which is not fully used, so with the help of these solutions we will be able to use this infrastructure more efficiently," she said.

At the same time, Bilotaite stressed that Lithuania's national security is "priority number one": "We need to assess who this neighbour is, what the threats are."

At a meeting on 6 February, Lithuania's Commission for National Security (CNS) proposed that the government stop the movement of pedestrians, cyclists, other vehicles and goods through the Lavoriskes (from the Belarusian side - Kotlovka) and Rajgardas (Privalka) checkpoints.

Since 18 August last year, Lithuania has closed two checkpoints on its border with Belarus: Shumskas (from the Belarusian side - Losha) and Tveriačius (Vidzy). This was done in response to possible threats from mercenaries of the Russian private military company Wagner stationed in our country.

At present, there are four checkpoints on the Lithuanian border with Belarus.
