ISW: Russian Troops Enter Chernihiv Region

A map of the fighting in northern Ukraine has been published.

The armed forces of the Russian Federation are carrying out sabotage and reconnaissance work near the border with Sumy and Chernihiv regions. This was detailed by analysts of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in their daily report for July 2.

The AFU General Staff said on July 2 that the enemy was conducting sabotage and reconnaissance work in the border area along the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, while geolocation footage from June 30 showing the Defence Forces shelling limited enemy positions in houses and a forested area north of Zhuravka could have been part of a limited Russian cross-border raid and not reflect a prolonged enemy presence in the area.

"The Russian military still retains reserves and flexibility to launch offensive operations in Sumy region if they do decide to do so," the report said.

In Kharkiv region, the enemy has advanced in the area of Vovchansk. According to a Russian military correspondent, the occupiers allegedly crossed the Seversky Donets River east of Bugruvatka, but ISW analysts found no visual evidence of this.

During July 2, fighting continued near Hlyboke, Liptsy and within Vovchansk. According to Vitaliy Sarantsev, a spokesman for the communications department of the Kharkiv task force on July 2, the enemy is moving reinforcements from other unspecified areas on the front to replenish losses to the north of Kharkiv region. For instance, three assault groups were redeployed by the occupiers.

The AFU General Staff said that the occupants had stormed AFU positions in the areas of Vovchansk and Hlyboke six times in Kharkiv Region with air support, but the situation was under control.
