Bundeswehr To Buy 105 Leopard Tanks, Patriot SAMs

Among other things, the Lithuanian brigade of the Bundeswehr will receive the tanks.

The Bundestag budget committee has approved the purchase of 105 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks for the Bundeswehr. In addition, a package worth around €6 billion, agreed on Wednesday, July 3, includes four Patriot surface-to-air missile systems, guided missiles and artillery ammunition.

Of this amount, €3bn will be earmarked for the purchase of tanks. The purchase of the Leopard 2A8 was also supported by the Bundestag's defence committee, approving a corresponding proposal by the German Defence Ministry, Reuters notes.

German armoured vehicle manufacturer KNDS is expected to supply the Bundeswehr with new tanks by 2030. The Leopard tanks will equip a German brigade in Lithuania and close significant gaps in the Bundeswehr's equipping that have existed for years, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said.

"Today we were indeed able to give a start to important armament projects that will be realised in the coming years," he pointed out. Pistorius assured that the procurement of ammunition will be significantly accelerated and expanded.

According to Markus Faber, chairman of the committee, several issues are thus solved at once - the new tanks will be sent to Lithuania to equip a Bundeswehr brigade, will replace the old Leopard 2 models in the German army's armoury, and will also provide an opportunity for further assistance to Ukraine. "Such large such purchases show that we are serious about defence and support for Ukraine in the long term," Faber said.

Thus, the German defence industry will now have a planning horizon until the end of the decade, the Bundeswehr will replenish its arsenals and Ukraine will receive the weapons it needs, the dpa news agency noted.
