Polish Minister of Internal Affairs Pass Decision On Complete Closure Of Border With Belarus

The document is already under consideration.

Polish Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak does not rule out closing the border with Belarus. He stated this in an interview with Polsat News on Wednesday, July 3.

"Everything is on the table. We want to see where Poland’s interests are, and where we can strike at the interests of those who harm Poland. Every solution is possible. I won't make any statements. We are working with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Infrastructure and the Minister of Finance under the leadership of the Prime Minister on the reaction to the actions of Belarus so that it is successful and effective and that it does not harm Polish interests,” Siemoniak answered the host’s question about whether it is possible to close all checkpoints on the border with Belarus.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski spoke about the idea of closing the border, however, on Wednesday he already clarified that it was about the movement of goods, and the government did not want to complicate the lives of ordinary Belarusians and Poles.

According to Siemoniak, the number of attempts to violate the border has decreased in recent weeks by 30-50%. This trend has been observed since the elections to the European Parliament. Siemoniak believes that this is due to several reasons, including a change in the tactics of the Polish side, including the emergence of special police units, and the creation of a buffer zone along part of the border.

"European elections, because, probably, there was a desire to destabilize the situation in Poland. But it also cannot be ruled out that the national holiday in Belarus, which falls on today [July 3 - Ed.], has led to the fact that services have concentrated on other areas. There is no doubt that the scale of what is happening at the border is regulated by Belarusian services. In this regard, a decrease in attempts today does not mean at all that there will be more or fewer of these attempts tomorrow or in two days,” he said.
