Paratrooper Commander Who Committed Atrocities In Bucha Was Detained In Russia
Artem Gorodilov

Gorodilov is under US sanctions.

Employees of the FSB military counterintelligence agencies detained the commander of the 83rd Separate Guards Air Assault Brigade, Artem Gorodilov. As Kommersant writes, the colonel, who is under sanctions of the United States and other countries, is suspected of fraud on a huge scale.

What exactly and for what amount Gorodilov is charged is still unknown.

In 2023, Gorodilov was included in US sanctions lists. His name appeared in a number of foreign media publications about war crimes committed in Ukraine.

In 2022, the New York Times published an investigation into the killings of civilians in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha, which was under Russian occupation in March.

Journalists spent eight months studying recordings from surveillance cameras, footage taken by local residents and reconnaissance drones, and talking with eyewitnesses. As a result, investigators were able to identify 22 Russian soldiers from the 234th Guards Air Assault Regiment of the Airborne Forces, under the command of, at that time, Lieutenant Colonel Artem Gorodilov, who were involved in the murders.

The newspaper called the killings and punishments a deliberate campaign by the Russians to “clear” the route to Kyiv and claimed that the crimes occurred on the orders or with the knowledge of their superiors.
