German Intelligence Chief: Russia Could Attack Europe At Any Time

Putin is determined to test Europe's borders.

The new head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND), Martin Jaeger, said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is determined to test European borders, which could escalate into a "heated confrontation" at any time.

He said this during a hearing in parliament on Monday, October 13, the Bloomberg.

Jaeger said Russia's actions are aimed at undermining NATO, destabilizing European democracies, dividing societies and intimidating the public.

"The hybrid means Russia is using to achieve this goal are now ubiquitous. The frequency of these individual incidents represents a new level of confrontation - a confrontation in which Russia views us as an adversary and a belligerent," the BND chief said.

Eger said Russian Federation is masking its intentions, but it is actually seeking to test Europe's borders. He said Europe is at best experiencing an "icy peace" that could turn into "a hot confrontation here and there" at any moment. The intelligence chief emphasized that it is necessary to prepare for further escalation.

"We cannot afford to sit back and assume that a possible Russian attack will not happen until at least 2029. We are already under fire today," Martin Jaeger said.

The BND chief noted that Russia is not holding back, defending its own interests against Europe. He emphasized that Moscow interprets restraint and leniency as weakness. Therefore, it is necessary to "draw the right conclusions from this."

"We must confront our opponents where necessary. To do so, we will take greater risks in a controlled and consistent manner," the intelligence official said.

Jaeger noted that this new approach could also trigger a negative reaction from the German public. In addition to public perception, the German intelligence chief says it requires the support and trust of politicians and lawmakers.

He says it is necessary to adapt the BND Act to "the realities of our new era." Jaeger says German intelligence services should be given more leeway, including authorization to conduct active countermeasures on foreign soil.
