China will take advantage of Russia's weakness.
Chinese leader Si Jinping told Donald Trump during talks in Beijing that Putin may end up "regretting" the decision to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
What could these words mean? Charter97.org spoke to Ukrainian political scientist, professor at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv Peter Oleshchuk about this:
-China sees Russia rapidly losing its allies for one reason or another. Literally before our eyes Armenia is falling away. For a long time, before Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, no one could think that Armenia would reorient itself from Russia to the West.
But nevertheless, this is happening before our eyes. This is one of the important points.
Russia simply does not have the resources to support its allies in conditions when all their resources are "poured" into this war. At the same time, it does not bring any obvious result. Obviously, from China's point of view, it was foolishness.
If you start a war, you have to calculate all the options. And, accordingly, if you declare a special operation that was supposed to be completed in 3 days, then it should be completed in 3 days. If you don't complete it in 3 days, then you misjudged the situation, then you are a loser.
I think that by Xi's standards Putin is a loser, a loser who is unable to plan and make adequate decisions.
- Does this mean any change in China's policy? Because China is actually fine with everything. Just because Putin regrets starting this war doesn't mean Xi regrets it. Xi is just fine.
Russia is finally in bondage from China. I think the Chinese are particularly satisfied with this, if we remember that there is such a Chinese ideologeme about the "century of humiliation". This is the period from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century, when China was a semi-colony, dependent on Western powers that imposed unfavorable treaties on it. In short, total state humiliation. And the current Communist China has largely positioned itself as a state that has overcome the consequences of this "century of humiliation." One of the states that then imposed colonialism on China was Russia.
Then the influence from the USSR, numerous border conflicts. China does not have any reason to have a favorable and positive attitude towards Russia. It can be used, but I am sure that they are particularly satisfied with the way the Russian leadership is now forced to humiliate itself before the Chinese leadership in order to ask for some preferences, resources.
The continuation of the war in Ukraine is quite satisfying for China. They are quite satisfied that Russia is getting into economic bondage from China, is completely reoriented towards China, and depends on China in all spheres.
- How will Beijing strengthen its influence in Russia?
- I think that this information dump is hardly accidental. Now they will again present it to Putin and say: "You are a loser, we can support you, we can help you, but come on, tell us what you have to offer. Only specifically. What preferences, what resources? Let's build us, for example, a gas pipeline with our own money to supply us with gas at an ultra-low price.
Maybe you still have something useful in Siberia? Come on, tell us what you can interest us in?"
