More and more Russians do not want their relatives to sign a contract with the Defense Ministry to participate in the war against Ukraine, according to a survey conducted by the Levada Center. As of October, 55% of respondents would not approve of such a relative's decision and only 30% would support it. A year ago, the ratio was different - 42% against and 40% for. For comparison: in May 2023, the majority or 52% of Russians said that they would take a positive attitude to the appearance of a volunteer in their environment, and only 41% would not want to see their relatives in the war.
The largest number of opponents of sending relatives to the front is recorded among women (60%), young people under 24 (75%), low-income Russians (60%) and residents of rural areas (62%). The share of dissenters exceeds the share of supporters in almost all social and age groups. Muscovites were the exception - among them 41% would rather approve of a family member's decision to sign a contract with the Defense Ministry, while 38% were opposed. Overall, 61% of Russians are in favor of starting negotiations and only 30% want the war to continue. In August, almost every third (30%) resident of the country claimed the death of loved ones in Ukraine, while another 28% said that their relatives or friends are currently involved in hostilities.
The growing public demand for an end to the war is also evidenced by the results of a closed VTsIOM poll commissioned by the Kremlin. According to the findings, in 2025, 56% of Russians admitted that they are "very tired of the NWO." Another 27% said they "partially agree" with this statement. The share of the former increased by 9 percentage points compared to 2024, while the latter increased by 6 p. p. In total, sociologists found that 83% of Russians are tired of the war, while the share of those who want the fighting to continue fell below 20%.
