Dorogobuzh Chemical Plant produces base components for explosives.

Russia's Dorogobuzh thermal power plant in Smolensk Region, which powers chemical production important for the defense industry of the aggressor country, was on fire overnight.

Andrey Kovalenko, head of the National Security and Defense Council's CPD Andrey Kovalenko, reported in Telegram.

"The Dorogobuzh thermal power plant caught fire in Russia overnight. It ensures the operation of chemical production, which is critical for Russia's defense industry," Kovalenko said.

The Dorogobuzh chemical plant produces ammonia, nitrates, nitrogen fertilizers - these are basic components for the production of explosives, particularly ammonium nitrate and nitrate mixtures for military needs.

"Without power supply to the CHPP, their output stops. It also provides stable power supply to defense enterprises of Smolensk region," he added.

The head of the SNBO CPD also stressed that the region is home to production facilities working for the Russian military-industrial complex: instrument-making, metallurgical units, repair base. The CHPP partially supports the energy of this industrial zone.

What is known about Dorogobuzh Combine

Dorogobuzh PJSC is a large industrial enterprise that is part of Acron Group and is one of the leading mineral fertilizer producers in Russia. It is the largest employer, taxpayer and exporter in the Smolensk Region.

The plant produces mineral fertilizers, particularly nitrogen fertilizers (ammonium nitrate) and complex fertilizers. According to 2024 data, the output of marketable products was about 2.1-2.3 million tons.

Ammonium nitrate is mainly used in the agricultural sector, but it also has industrial applications, in particular as a component of some explosives. Therefore, the plant's products, especially ammonium nitrate and nitric acid, are dual-use goods.
